Anyone had any experience with AMD 64bit Dual Core Processors?

I have brought one and set it up but have not had the chance to play with it yet.

At the risk of sounding rude, I am not so interested in the ‘don’t do that….it’s unsupported answers’

I know Avid is currently 32 bit but with introduction of Windows Vista, someday I think most Ap’s will go the 64bit route?

Just wondering who is using these and what your thoughts are.

    Thanks

It will not work in 64 bit mode. The dongle security drivers does not work in 64 bit mode. So you cannot even start the application to test.

BTW – there is a bug that affects some AMD users – a green line with their QT files.

I’ve been using Avid and AMD’s ever since Xpress Pro 4.3.1. I actually would recommend that if you are going to go mojo that you use an Opteron processor setup, because you need a motherboard with multiple pci-bus segments. I actually have never had a problem that I couldn’t overcome or work around. The green line thing has never affected me, and I love being able to have my dual 3ghz opterons instead of buying some intel product.

Technically it should work, but if Avid will work relies a lot more upon your motherboard chipset (I recommend going Nforce4 or Nforce5 chipset with AMD and Avid as I have used Nforce 3 and 4 with it with no problem), your video card (Nvidia is HEAVILY recommended over ATI, a lot of ATI users have been experiencing a problem where they cant see video in their composer window with ATI cards), and the amount of RAM you have in your system.

Do it at your own risk, but the bug is well documented.

I’ve been using a system with two dual core AMD’s and two quadro1400’s for a few months now and have had no probelms to speak of.

    Hey,

    Thanks for the feedback.

Have had a chance to play with it since posting and it is working well for a cheaper alternative to say an HP8200 Intel machine.

I am only using a single dual core processor on an Nforce 4 board and an Nvidia 7900gt with 2 gig of RAM. Animated DVE Marquee titles are rendering very fast which is nice. multi nested video tracks with Boris effects are flying. Every thing else thus far is problem free. As a side note I am running Windows XP pro 32bit. I built this machine as a home editor and wanted an all rounder that would also be able to play games.

Michael IP, What motherboard are you running your 2x dual Opterons on?

    Thanks
