    I would like to use AI on an animation I’m currently doing, but I jisut rendered out a 105 frame sequence that took over five hours on my Dual Core MacBook Pro- impractical to say the least.

    The R10 documentation is, as usual, bloody awful and whilst it gets you started, is woefully lacking in depth (which is appaling for such and expensive piece of software). Does anyone know of any tricks to speed up AI to a useable speed, or should I just forget it all together?

    Umm, AO is slow in most programs, there’s no way around it. It’s more or less just a simplified version of radiosity and the more complex the scene, the slower it gets. 5 hours doesn’t sound too bad. If you want to realyl speed up things, check your number of rays and the distance thresholds. These are by far the most critical factors. Take them down to the bare minimum without producing noise. Other than that consider baking your AO into diffuse maps for al lstatic objects – will look the same, but b e much faster once you have the textures.

    Baking the object is the way to do it.. Its all automatic and is very beneficial for animated AI render speeds. The initial Bake will take ages but dont panic as the renders then fly.. The application of the new material replaces itself and hides the old material. Its not deleted.

    The only issues ive not mastered with Bake are materials with transparency like glass. But i cant see how bake would ever work with this.
