Can’t speak to Sorenson, but I don’t think Compressor will quite get you there.

The MPEG 4 preset is the only way I know to get h.264 CBR – by selecting Improved Profile and building a custom preset from there. But even then, maxing out the bit rate setting to 30 Mbps gets an actual rate of a little less than 20 Mbps for a 1080P file. In addition the highest audio rate setting is 320.

If someone else knows hoe to do it, I hope they’ll contribute.

I read an article some place that said it was possible to encode a CBR mov by choosing Streaming in the Compression Settings window, but I’ve tried and it is reported as VBR.

This is pretty easy in general.

This is a little strange. As best as I understand it (and I’m comfortable admitting I’m in a gray area)
PCM – Pulse Code Modulated is uncompressed.
SMPTE302m is audio mapped into a TS stream for MPEG2
And AAC is an MPEG4 audio stream.

It looks like they’re asking you to put the uncompressed audio into an MPEG1 stream – but as an AAC?
At 320, you can’t hear a difference from an uncompressed file, and usually data rates of 448 are used with 5.1 audio (not stereo.) So, yeah, it’s odd.

Shot in the dark: You might want to try an FFMPEG encoder for this, something with a GUI, such as FFMPEGX which will let you do something like this.

Or ask them for a previously encoded sample.

Make sure to charge them extra.

Did you ever find a solution to getting your files encoded properly?

Recently I have been asked to also provide files to Amazon, but they have been rejected due to the file having a ‘variable’ frame rate mode. This has sent me on a venture of learning all about a variety of encoders.

I initially used Handbrake (hey, it’s free!) and am now using Adobe Media Encoder WITH a trial of x264 Pro ($300) in hopes that the mp4 will not have a variable frame rate of ‘variable’. My initial results we successful, but the audio and video file came out separate and not multiplexed. Based on certain settings the option is or is not available for multiplexing.

I think I finally found the right combo, but stereo audio only goes up to 320 kbps. It seems that if I select surround 5.1, the encode fails. Well, perhaps it should be as the original sound is stereo.

What settings (audio and other) did you end up using? And what program did you end up encoding with?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks Jeff, sorry for the late answer. I had to pass in the end then my tryouts for a 26 minute show to more than 8-14 hours with mac pro tower 8 core and 32 gb.
But I keep your specs in mind,

Hi Michael,

no I passed on the job. My cpu Mac pro tower is to slow. I used compressor 3 and 4, quicktime 7, Squeeze 8. The new one has options for this kind of compression but didn’t have the monet for it.
It all would work but the kbs is limited. I wanted to try and see if we could sneak it by…
