AMA Workflow Double Check
Hello,
I just wanted to compare my notes on how to handle a project with AMA’ing files working on OS 10.8, Avid 6.5, and Canon quicktimes.
After transcoding the footage (DNX 36 in my case), I saw a video that said to not work with the “.new” files, as I won’t be able to uprez those files later on. What they suggested is to take your Canon quicktimes offline, then use relink on the original AMA clips which will then connect themselves to the MXF files I created.
It’s kind of a pain for me because I only have one drive that has the AMA’d media and the Avid transcoded MXF files. But is this the ‘proper’ way of handling the media?

lot’s of misunderstanding on AMA.
The advice not to work with the .new files is just plain wrong.
If you have early 5D files its best to use QTChanger to add TC and reel id.
Before you AMA have(but not essential)
AMA, transcode, edit with the.new files.
Relink final Sequence to re- mounted AMA sources.
V6.5 offers the best relink options of any MC version.

That’s what I thought originally!!!
The canon footage has TC already. Is it a problem though if I didn’t put reel ID on it?

I’ve tried testing it, but I still haven’t been able to figure out the last step to up-rez my DNX36 to DNX175. How is this done?

It will work in MC without TC or reelid but if you have problems later it’s harder to unpick.
V6.5 has more re-link options but the simplest way when you have the final sequence is to make a copy into a new fresh bin.
Quit MC and add XX to the end of any Avid MediaFiles folders (to take all media offline)
Then relaunch MC and that final sequence should show as offline.
Now re-mount all the AMA sources used in the sequence (or all of them if easier)
There are options in V6.5 to make this easier but in earlier versions it requires re doing the AMA mount volume (or AMA mount files depending on the source) untill all thsoe show as online.
Select the sequence and choose file re-link. unselect the “use media from current project) make sure the bottom settings say any HD format. then relink. The sequence should now link to the AMA media.
save and quit.
Bring the Avid media files folders back online (remove the XX) and re-launch MC then transcode the sequence to DNX175Pat Horridge
