Am I going mad?? Aphla channel gone nuts! AFX to FCP.
Hi guys,
Have just been going mad for the last 2 hours, Ive been using AFX for a few years now and never had any trouble with transparency or alpha channels when exporting to FCP.
But now, for some reason FCP isnt picking up the alpha channel so Ive just got my graphic with a black backround and I need to place the straps through out a pilot show, which is late already.
Ive tried alsorts of settings, ie:none, animation, dv pal – straight and premulitplied, RGB + Alpha IS selected.
When in FCP have tried ‘Modify/straight’ – but no joy.
This is driving me nuts as it wasnt a problem before, am I missing something?
The only other option is to export the edit points from FCP and bring them into AFX but that is going to take ages over a 24 minute show and will mess up grading..
Aggggh! I want to be a gardener!!! haha.

Thanks for the response.
When you say double check that I have an alpha channel in AE, what do you mean exactly? In the render settings I clicked RGB+Alpha. The composition only consist’s of one layer, its dead simple (a van crossing the screen), its just a file Im using for a transition through out the travel show, so yeah, its literally just that one layer sitting in the comp. Theres no ‘add alpha layer’ to the comp in AFX is there?
I swear Im losing my marbles as Ive done hundreds of straps with no problem at all!

Great, at the moment its 100% white which should explain it, sorry how do I adjust the properties for this? To get it down to 0%? Am I missing something obvious again! haha…

Thanks again for your help and sorry to ask such dumb questions.. Yeah the background is set to transparent and like I said its only one jpeg layer which is why its driving me nuts, just cant see why its not working, will keep plugging on and try to figure it out what Im missing! Will be bald by the end of it ha.
Sorry where can you get this magic wand? haha.

Yes Im aware of that. Ive tested all sorts of files, even straight text doesnt seem to work.
I dont want the JPEG file to be transparent at all and yes it is masked, it is simply a masked image of a van animated from right to left across the whole screen to use as a transition, the van is at 100% opacity. Its the background thats got me stumped. But like I said Ive tried a variety of files. Im going to try re-install FCP+AFX.

REinstalling AE or FCP is going to be a possibly dangerous waste of time. You could loose most of your third party stuff and prefs. PITA.
If we were watching over your shoulder, we could probably figure this out for you quickly. I’ve never, in many many years, heard of the alpha handler failing within After Effects. I do not even see how that’s possible although it IS possible for the alpha buffer to get clogged up. Shutting down and restarting the Macintosh will purge the memory registers.

Am I missing something obvious again! haha… < If the alpha is opaque, you have at least one layer that is blocking it or you have a corrupt project file (which is highly unlikely). You seem to indicate that you have checked the alpha function with text and other items but I don't see where you tried starting from scratch with a new project. Please try that before you reinstall anything. On a Macintosh, with this symptom, it's just not likely to achieve anything. So, I default to suggesting this is going to be that DOH! Moment for you when you get it figured out. bogiesan
