  • Alternative to Vegas Pro MXF wrapper for Vegas Movie Studio

    Hello,

I’m in need of a helping hand at the moment:
I’m trying to find myself a good archiving format.

About a year ago, I bought myself a copy of Vegas Movie Studio and the past year’s been learning the basics of this program and editing in general.
However, now I’m in a point where I need to do some archiving for videos and I need a good format for this job.

I’m aware of the codecs such as Lagarith and HuffYUV.
I even tested Lagarith just to see how it works. However, as it seem to be good lossless codec, it takes too much space and therefore, I’m looking for something that takes less space but still retains as good quality as possible (Sony AVC/H.264 @ 20 000 000 bps just isn’t enough for my taste, and sadly I can’t go higher… 🙁 ).

I read that Sony MXF would be somewhat good format for archiving. However, it seems that this is Vegas Pro feature only.
I downloaded Vegas Pro 10 Trial just to test it out. By the first tests I’ve done, it seems to be something I’m looking for!
But as much as I’d love to buy Vegas Pro upgrade for my Movie Studio, at this point; I’m not really that eager to put ~400€ into a single software just for this one feature.

So, this leads me into a question: Is there any alternative(s) of Sony MXF that would be compatible with Movie Studio and still be close to the Sony MXF in quality / file size?

    All suggestions are warmly welcome!
    Thanks in advance!

What format is your source video?

    Hello Mike,

I actually have two that I work with.
The other one is .avi and the second one is MJPEG.

Ilkka, when you say .avi, do you mean DV-AVI such as from a camcorder?

    Mike,

    No.
The .avi I’m talking about is made by a program called Fraps.
This software is made for video game recordings as well as screen recording from PC.

I believe that Fraps uses some sort of lossless codec since my Movie Studio recognizes it when I made a test with .avi (uncompressed). When I checked options for that, there were different formats and one of them was “Fraps video decompressor”, but Vegas gave me an error when I tried to render with that. I believe it’s somewhat comparable to Lagarith in quality / size.

Ilkka, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
I’ve never used Fraps but have heard that it’s an odd file format so I stand by my original suggestion of a lossless codec for archive purposes.

The other thing you could do is just store the entire project on an external hard drive.
They’re very cheap these days so it is an option.

    Mike,

    Thanks for the answer!
I’m actually planing on getting another HDD just for archiving my videos. However, I’m a bit skeptic about the idea of using separate HDD for lossless videos, since we’re talking about hundreds of videos right now.

I would use Lagarith if the HDD space wasn’t problem.
But if there ain’t some other format that would compare with Sony MXF (in size / quality), then I might consider with upgrading to Pro version.
In this situation I have feeling that it comes cheaper by just upgrading the program than buying many HDD’s in a year.
