  • Alternative to masking/alpha matte?

    Hello.

So I have an animation I’m creating where a 3d logo is casting shadows on a wall behind it. As part of the animation of the logo, a pre-comp of the logo spreads from the middle and stretches along the Y-axis until its about twice as long. I know (from research and just testing) that the masks I have doing this are what is breaking my shadows.

I have tried masking within the pre-comp instead, and using a shape layer with alpha matte both inside the pre-comp or in my main composition. In every case, it breaks the shadows.

I know (now) that AE guides clearly state that masks will break the shadows, but I thought I would be fine with the masking happening inside the pre-comp instead (and certainly thought the alpha matte to a shape layer would work).

So my question is: How do I go about replicating the effect I want (the logo ‘growing’ from the center along both ends of the Y-axis) without using masks or alpha mattes?

If it wasn’t already obvious, I’m primarily a Premiere user trying to up my AE game a bit.

    Thanks in advance!

Are you using the Cinema 4D renderer?

Can you show us what you’ve got so far? It would help us make better suggestions.
