  • Alpha Channel/Transparency on export or render

    Hi All

i just started using CS3 After Effects, coming over from Sony Vegas 8 pro. i imported a video (AVI/uncompressed) into AE in which the Alpha channel is set by Vegas. i add my effect, advanced lightning, and render it out hoping the transparency is still there. But when i pull the video into Vegas, AE appears not to have generated an Alpha channel. i am using default settings of AVI export and “Make a Movie” on the composition menu.
Can some one help me with the settings for Alhpa channel/transparency on render or export?

the Composition consists of, imported AVI that has transparency, advance lightning layer (adjustment layers), 4 effect layers (adjustment layers) , what am i missing?

    thanks in advance

In the render queue, click on the downwards facing arrow button between where it says lossless and output module. Select from the menu Lossless with alpha. Then render as usual. AE recognises the rendered video’s alpha channel; I’m not sure about Vegas as I don’t use it.

I would also suggest making sure that there is alpha to render in your composition by pressing opt-4 (or alt-4 on a PC) to view the alpha channel. Some effects have settings that need to be tweaked to generate the alpha properly.
