Alpha Channels in Premiere avi files
My problem is that i am trying to create a lower 3rds video that has an alpha channel on it so that I can use it as a shorter way to creating motion lower thirds, as appose to having to lay four layers down each time on my timeline in premiere. For my four layers it is: video 1 – background video, video 2 – jumpback(track matted), video 3 – matte image created with title tool(prtl file), video 4 – visible title. When I put those four it works playing back on the timeline. When i take out line 1 to export an avi file with an alpha channel for my shortcut, it exports; but when i try to use it on another project and apply the alpha channel on that video it does not take out the alpha channel. Can someone advise on what steps am i taking wrong. is it the type of exporting? there must be a way to do this? thanks.

Well, hopefully someone will chirp in and tell me I’m completely wrong, but in the mean time, I wasn’t aware that you could in fact export an AVI file with an Alpha Channel. For what you’re describing, I use After Effects, and export as a 32 bit Quick Time file, which supports an Alpha Channel. I then import the Quick Time file into Premiere, which recognizes the alpha. I’m new to Premiere Pro 2, but have never heard of being able to export files from Premiere with alphas (so that the transparency will be recognized). That doesn’t mean its not able to do this, as I say, I’m new to version 2.0.
In the meantime, a possible remedy if you don’t have After Effects, might be to create a single “lower third” project, and then when you need it, import that project into the one your working, and drop your lower third sequence onto your new timeline.
