Is there a way, after making a selection in AE to make it into an alpha channel without having to render the footage out first?
When using Keylight, is there a way to save the screen matte as a separate item so that it can be used elsewhere for other purposes?

And, to answer your first question, yeah. Just precomp it and use it as a track matte.
