    Hey Everyone-

I was recently inspired by this American Express commercial:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyvgsQYYscU

I don’t want to literally recreate the look of celluloid but I do want to create thin, long, floating strips created out of films I’ve made. The idea would be that they could speed up and slow down and create motion in the photos. My initial idea has been to create an image sequence of a 30 second clip and then import all the image layers into After Effects. I assumed I could then apply “Align and Distribute” to all the layers (500!) and arrange them horizontally, like a film strip.
Unfortunately, I’m not getting much help from that function but I think I’m doing something wrong. Could someone verify if this is the right path to go down for the look I want?

    Thanks!

Without knowing how you would like to animate the sequence it’s kinda pointless giving you all the necessaries.

But I will suggest that you break down your work into smaller parts. IOW, do you really need to work with 500 images at one go???

Work with as large a sequence as you need at any point in time. If no more than 40 will be seen at a point in time, then that is the largest that you really need to work with. Of course give yourself an allowance, so maybe 60 or 80. The other 400+ can be created in like manner and then placed strategically in space and time to create the larger look. Hope that makes sense.

    Good Luck!

    This may work.

Don’t bother creating long strips of multitudinous images.
Create a comp with the video you want to use and a film border around it.
Use ‘Motion Tile’ on this comp.
Increase your x width and animate the x position property.

I’ve done similar effects that way.
You can always use masked adjustment layers or duplicated footage to blur out the edges of the frame and improve upon the base effect.
