All On2 Flix Flash encoders discontinued immediately
If you’ve been following the news lately, things don’t look good for the future of Flash, especially when you read the latest news flash below (no pun intended) from On2, the company who created the encoding engine that made Flash the happening thing for about three years running, until Steve Jobs, h.264, and the iPhone ruined their run.
Dear Flix customer,
As of June 21st, 2010 we are discontinuing sales of licenses for On2 Flix Pro, On2 Flix Standard, On2 Flix Exporter, On2 Flix PowerPlayers, On2 Flix Live, On2 Flix SDK for DirectShow and Live, and On2 Flix Publisher. Google will no longer sell or support these products.
FINAL ON2 FLIX PRODUCT INSTALLERS
Our Flix licensing server will go offline permanently on December 1, 2010.
IMPORTANT: We have created final On2 Flix Standard, Pro and Exporter product installers that do not verify license keys over the Internet. We strongly recommend that all On2 Flix customers download the final On2 installer for the product you are using and save a backup copy of the installer. These installers will go offline on December 1, 2010.

So what are the ramifications for those of us that use On2 for flash encoding?

Kinda sounds like everyone has started to catch onto the fact that they can encode their videos using H.264 and just changing the extension to make it a Flash video. I would have to say that would put a serious bind onto On2. Maybe they finally had the economy to catch up to them. Could be anything.

I’m sure it will still work, if you want to use it. But like I said, you can encode an H.264 Quicktime and just change the extension to .flv and you have a Flash video for free.

“Better get the version that doesn’t check for serials online — On2 has it up on their website now, and they state very clearly, “This is the last version.”
BTW, it tuns out that Google bought On2 and the merger was just consummated.

I think this is related to the fact that Google have made the VP8 codec open-source. There’s no point continuing to develop a paid-for program when the open-source community will soon build it into free encoding programs.

I expect that we’ll see a free encoding implementation of this appearing very soon, possibly into programs that use the ffmpeg engine. It’s being built into the WebM project:

Ah hah! I knew there was something more to this. Doesn’t this put an interesting light on Adobe and its Flash products? Definitely be worth the time to see what comes of this.

VP8 is not comparable with H.264 for quality, and MPEG-LA is preparing a broadside against it on the licensing side, so I’m not holding my breath.
