  • aligning hexagons along cylinder

    Hello,
I’m trying to recreate the cover art for the Muse album just as a learning exercise –
    check it out here

and it requires creating all these hexagons in a cylinder shape, and i’m having difficulty with it.
If i create the single hex shape and clone it along the surface of a cylinder, I have the problem of them intersecting, as well as not aligning in a pattern how they need to. I tried getting them to not intersect by using a rigid body tag and a follow force of 10, but while they separate, they get all spun in weird directions.
I also tried creating two columns of hexagons, all aligned with each other, then cloning that and setting the step rotation to make it curve into a cylinder, but that’s not creating the smooth shape I want, in addition to creating some overlap.
any thoughts on how to get this accomplished? I’m not really worrying about the coloring at this point, just the hex-cylinder shape. I’m pretty new to C4D, so thanks in advance for any and all help.

possibly a mograph grid of two hexagons offset then add a Wrap deformer set to spherical

    worked out. thanks very much!
now i have to sort out the coloring and getting that jagged bottom edge – I tried doing that with a boole, but no dice.

    anyhow, thanks again
