aliasing/resolution issues on export of a Premiere colour-grading project
Right so here’s something that’s been doing my head in for the past few days.
I offered to go over the colours of a short documentary I otherwise have no involvement in. The job was through Shooting People and voluntary and it’s just a simple little doc so we’re not talking about holding up a serious project, although I did get a complimentary payment of £50, which was nice.
Anyway the problem I’ve been having is that on export from premier (In which all my grading work was done) the output video is of noticeably worse quality than the original. I received the film as a single .mov file, DV PAL codec but bizarrely 768×576 instead of 720×576. There is no video standard I’m aware of that uses that ratio and none of the presets available in premier CS5 accommodate this nonsense. I’ve tried a range of presets and customized the export resolution to match that of the original but every single attempt produces the same aliased jagged edges.
I’ve never come across this problem before and it’s beginning to really frustrate me. I don’t currently have preview files rendered for the sequence but I don’t have “use preview files” checked when exporting so that shouldn’t make any difference. I’ve exported as a PNG.mov, MP4.mov, MPEG preview file, PAL DV.mov, NTSC DV.mov and as a P2 DVCPro50 PAL preview. Between all these different presets I can discern no effect on the aliasing problem.
any ideas anyone? The director is expecting a decent copy this weekend and I’m also looking forward to putting this one behind me.
