Aliasing issue on NASA logo in animation
I just finished an animation for NASA that visually describes the classification of a planet and why Pluto is no longer a planet. Though there are several things I would like to change in the final version (isn’t there always), I can’t seem to figure out why the NASA logo at the end of the animation gets so aliased on the red swish? I’ve tried many different settings on compression (it is Apple’s H.264), but can’t seem to get around it. Any ideas? It’s their logo so I can’t do much with it but would love to get this figured out. The DVD version isn’t as bad (since it is seen on an interlaced television), but it is still there even in that format. Unfortunately, it needs to compressed for web delivery. It is a 6 minute CG animation, so if you are up for watching it here is the url:

Yes, the logo looks fine in After Effects and if I render it out using the Animation codec. But, once I start to use a compressed codec, the aliasing occurs. I’ve done tons of logos and can’t explain why the NASA logo is so problematic. Is it the red color that doesn’t play well? Any suggestions on how to bypass the issue?

sounds like your codec doesnt like the red.
maybe try to desaturate it a bit before you encode

I agree. A lot of codecs don’t like saturated red.
Render some tests of just the logo at various tweaks of saturation and possibly hue and value.

Yep, it’s probably the red (it’s technically 252R, 61G, 33B) combined with the width of the vector. Where did you get your source files for the “meatball”? I understand that we have a new HD version in the works. (I’ve requested one.)
I can ftp you another meatball or point you to a place where you can get a decent one if that one doesn’t work. (Are you using the animated one rather than the still one?)
