  • AJA or Matrox – New Question

Posted by Stephen Mann on September 25, 2010 at 9:59 pm

I have a nice permanent greenscreen studio, but my budget limits my shooting to existing HDV gear. Could I use hardware from Matrox or AJA to capture the HDMI from the camera in 4:4:4 to get a better chromakey instead of the HDV 4:2:0 colorspace over Firewire?

Am I completely off-base here or am I looking in the right direction? Advice would be appreciated.

Which HDV camera are we talking about? In general you can get a better than HDV signal from HDV cameras equipped with HDMI connections. Then you get a Blackmagic Intensity or something similar.

There’s no decision yet on the camera. I am currently using Sony Z1’s in the studio, but I am considering buying another camera specifically for the studio, leaving the Z1’s free for field use. Don’t most HDV cameras have an HDMI output?

Mostly yes- but not all, especially older ones. Narrow down the camera first and then ask the question again. But in general, what you want to do can be done. Then again, I’ve pulled fine keys off HDV and DV for that matter. The trick is perfect lighting more than file compression- though of course it’s nice to have a less compressed source to start with. Adobe After Effects is amazing at pulling keys from most footage.

Why would the camera make any difference if it outputs HDMI?

Huh? What is your follow up question? Every HDV camera has a different chip design, processing power and lens attached. They are definitely not created equal any more than say all digital still cameras are.

How can it make a difference from AJA or Matrok?
