AJA Io LA vs. Blackmagic Design Decklink Extreme
My company is planning to purchase a G5 computer. We edit uncompressed video, captured from a Beta SP deck and output it to Beta SP as well.
So far, we have used Targa Cinewave on the G4 (Panther) computers that we’ve been editing with.
But since there is no more Cinewave, we have been wondering what will be the best choice between the Io LA and the Blackmagic card.
What should we go with?Thanks in advance for your help…

I’d suggest the IO because its outboard and thus also portable… one Io might be able to serve more than one bay that way (at least for a while)?

I recommend the Extreme card because its less expensive, is easily installed or removed from a G5, and is out of the way because its inside the box. Jerry’s reasoning is also sound…

I can’t recommend AJA products enough. They work, they’re extremely well supported, and they have a very close working relationship with the Apple FCP team.
I also like the fact that that Io is an external box, I have an LA here with two Kona 2 systems so I can just move it to whichever workstation needs analog input.

I know your post is about Decklink Extreme I’m looking at Decklink Studio. I have a MacPro 1,1 (2008) which works with both FCP 7 & FCP X. The new issue that formed regarding the use of a Sony JH-3 Deck that I’ll use to in-guest our HDCAM tapes into FCP to perform our online final edit in HD at 1080p! I was told to add a PCI-e card which the BlackmagicDesign “DeckLink Studio” card will be a good capture card for my Mac Pro 1,1 (will that work with my Mac Pro 1,1?) I will be able to connect w/ SDI ports from the sony JH-3 Deck and on the Decklink Studio PCI card I get for my Mac Pro and then will need to get Deck Control for controlling with FCP 7 to batch capture HDCAM tapes into fcp at full quality, full HD resolution from the JH-3 deck for the final edit. Will this system work? Does this make sense?
