    Hi,

I have about 50 VHS tapes. The tapes are lectures, most of which are about 60 minutes. The footage was shot on 3/4″ which has deteriorated. There are short gaps in the when the 3/4″ deck changed tape. The VHS tapes, which don’t have timecode, were created by dubbing the 3/4″ tapes, one after the other onto the VHS tape. About every 20 minutes a new piece of 3/4″ is dubbed onto the end. The video signal and the control track (which the deck uses for timecode) breaks up at that point. I tried capturing a tape through a Canopus ADVC100 and by using capture now I could capture an entire tape. With the entire tape in FCP it was easy to get every good frame off of the tape.

I would prefer to capture to Photojpeg via the IO LA and avoid the DV codec (better quality and less space [videos will be archived on hard drives]). Can I capture the entire tapes using the IO LA (which I just purchased, should have checked first)?

    Thanks!

    Mitch

You should be able to capture either tapes.

Are you wanting to automate/control your decks to tranfer the footage? For example, set your capture length to 60 minutes, walk away, and come back when it’s done?

If your tapes don’t have time code, that won’t be possible. You can set the Device Control in Log and Capture to “Non-Controlable Device” and capture with the “Now” button. You’ll have to stop the capture when it’s done.
If the tapes have timecode and the TC drops, you can disable “Abort capture on dropped frames” in the User Preferences.

    Best wishes,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

Batch capture, setting the capture length and having FCP automatically capture exactly 60 minutes is not necessary.

As long as I can capture the entire tape (which doesn’t sound like it will be a problem) I can do what I need.

When I captured through the Canopus FCP never saw the dropped frames or Timecode break. I was hoping IO would work the same but turning off “Abort Capture…” is fine.

    Thank You Very Much!
