I’m assuming a G4 is right out of the question for ProRes, but with the AJA IO HD, anyone know if it will be compatible with a G5 (capture and layoff)? I didn’t find anything on AJA’s website (I could be blind though).

right now if it is not an intel box, you will not be able to encode ProRes in HD.

THe IoHD was designed to handle the ProRes encode inside the box, making it useable even on a laptop.

I personally doubtyou would be able to handle ProRes on a G4, however the IoHD, by handling the compression independent from your CPU would make older G5’s compatible with ProRes and FCS2 workflows.

    Hi,
I sent AJA the same question and received this reply:

    “We are not sure if the Io HD will be compatible with the Power PC G5;
however we suspect that the dual processor model will work.
Right now QA Engineering is testing the Io HD on Mac Pro G5 computers only; however as we get closer to the release date, Engineering will test with Power PC G5 models and provide us (support) with a computer compatibility matrix.”

[eyad.hh] “ooops. sorry. i just saw your name at the top!! “

    why?
the people at AJA are far better connected than I am on what will or will not work with the IoHD. I was taking somewhat of a guess.

I always assumed the moderators of the forums worked with the company (i.e i thought you worked with AJA, and would therefore have the latest info).
    Anyhow,
I guess the summary of all this is we all have to wait till AJA tests the IOHD on PowerPCs and let us know!

Just FYI, I’m guessing they mean Mac Pro Intel as the G5 is a PowerPC processor and the Mac Pro’s only have Intel processors.

Thanks for contacting AJA! We’ll have to wait for it to ship to see I guess.

I do not get paid anything by anyone to be on the Cow as a forum leader, and while some Mfg’s do maintain their forums as tech support AJA is not one of those, the only regular AJA postings here are from the AJA Sales Dept.

Yes, I do regularly speak on AJA’s behalf at shows and user groups etc. I am honored that they have kept me around as long as they have.

OK, i ran some tests on video i shot this weekend. it appears to confirm what gary adcock posted as well as the new apple tech article

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305582

i have a Quad G5 3.5GB Ram and kona 3/hd10ava with more than capable storage for 2k if needed.

1080i capture to pro res 1080 and pro res 1080 HQ both failed. frame drops were indicated after a few seconds. failure

now, the one thing i did to get it to work was to cross convert the 1080i to 720p in the kona 3 capture card. i captured 720p (not HQ) and it worked fine with no dropped frames.

so hey, i can capture 720p fine!
