Purchase price of camera does not include plate. Panasonic’s plate, the SHAN-TM700, is listed at $495, available as low as $425 with some dealers. However, I note that the Sony plate (VCT-U14) appears to be interchangeable; the new price is $189 or less. Does anyone know a reason why the Sony plate should not be used with this camera? If not, new purchasers should buy the Sony, at a savings of over $200.

Been using the Sony on the SDX for years, and the HDX for months. Works just fine.

Exact same plate. Don’t know why Panasonic charges so much.

Just be sure to order the right toe plate for matte box with rods. The mounting holes are different on the SONY vs the Panasonic plates. I had to recently re-drill holes in my plate in order to use mine.

panny also gets you on the camera mic. It’s now a non-standard 4-pin stereo onboard mic. I was hoping to save a few bucks on that too – but no.

When we got our HDX900, I wired up a short XLR Female to XLR Male cable. The male end had the four pin and the female end had the standard XLR 3 pin.
We then used our standard Sennheiser shotgun mic “on Camera”.

I bought a RODE NTG-1 short shot gun (on my soundman’s rec)for under $300 cdn and then had the modified 3-5 pin XLR made by the company that sold me the 900. I also had a custom sliding plexi case cover made for the Pan monitor (protect the face and controls during travel)and drilled out holes top and bottom and used a couple of 3/8 short bolts to attatch it to the existing mounting holes in the monitor itself…doesn’t take up a ton of space in the travel kit and gives me great protection from screen damage.
