Anyone have any ideas for taking an audio clip and making it sound like the person is on the moon or perhaps sound like they are an airline pilot’s radio to air traffic control which sounds similar. I have a clip of someone on the moon and I’m looking to add that “feel” to the audio clips. I use final cut pro 6.

    Thanks!

Firstly FCP is not a good audio tool. If you have no other option, use Sound Track Pro which has better EQ and dynamics.

The five attribute that you need are EQ, dynamics compression, distortion, phasing, noise.

Firstly EQ the sound to roll off a lot of low frequencies. Secondly parametric boost around 1-2 Khz. Roll off all hi frequencies above about 6Khz.

Compress the dynamics savagely. Distort the signal. This can be done with various overdrive plugins. If you have access to a VST capable device, there are free plugins like Ruby Tube that can distort plus something that can phase or flange the sound. Finally you need crackle and noise as a background to help sell the effect.

If it is astronaut, then the classic NASA beep can be probably found online. Listen here to get an idea of what the elements are –

alternatively, if you know anyone running pro tools, give it to them and they’ll be able to process in minutes flat. 🙂
(We had to do loads of audio for a NASA Launch mock up video last year.)

I used to spend my time wondering, now it’s all used up rendering.

there is a plug-in for ProTools called Cosmonaut Voice which will do exactly what you are after.

In the olden days, even though we had analog processors, we’d put a microphone in front of an intercom speaker and have our talent run their lines through the box.
Using various intercoms, PAs, battery bullhorns, and even just a megaphone allowed each character to have a characteristic sound.
