  • Air travel with HVX-200/Hard drives and laptop

Posted by Jeff Wilmes on June 13, 2007 at 2:23 am

At the end of the month, June, I will be traveling domestically by air for the first time with the HVX-200/hard drives/firestore and laptop. Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced problems carrying the above items on the plane with them. Thanks.

I’ve been from Utah to Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Alaska with two cameras and a raid in three pelican 1520 cases as carry-on luggage and have had no problems in any of the airports or planes.

Nope! Just got off the plane with all of that stuff minus firestore.

Some airlines in foreign countries might scoff if you have too many cables (bnc or otherwise) so keep that in mind.

Thanks to all. Are the screeners asking to take hard drives out of the pelicans, like they do with laptops? Just trying to get a sense of going through the checkpoints and unloading the gear into the bins.

Hard drives I have no problems with, but you usually have to remove your laptop and camera from their cases.

Yes, I have also always had to remove the camera and laptop and run them through the X-ray machine in a plastic bin, but I have never had a problem, including a few international flights.

Thanks again for the feedback. I’ll plan accordingly.

Traveled all over the world ( 7 countries on 3 continents in 2 years) with my HVX’s , I only get hassled in the US

I never have had to take the extra drives out, but I always pull the cameras out and put then in a tray just like the laptops, so keep enough time to get all the stuff back into your cases.

FYI –the HVX 200 fits perfectly in a Victorinox 22″ roll-aboard suitcase. I had custom foam cut for so I could get both cameras in one case. I stash all the cables and my G-mini drives in the pouches below the foam.

Looks like luggage and have gotten it in places I could not have taken a pelican case.

Never listen to anyone telling you that the carry-on you brought (which passed on previous flights) has to be checked (not gate checked, but checked) particularly if you’re in Amsterdam.

My sister had her equipment stolen with this scam. In a Pelican 1510; It was “flagged” by a random security guy as to big for any carry-on (though every plane up until that point had no problem with it), and she was forced to check it and unlock it for “security reasons”. When she got into Africa her luggage all arrived safely, but the case had been opened and the camera/etc.. was stolen. We Reported it stolen, but international issues, etc… I don’t expect any return.

[XONIKZ] “Never listen to anyone telling you that the carry-on you brought (which passed on previous flights) has to be checked (not gate checked, but checked)”

    not true.

there is still a single bag limit when passing thru London Heathrow, ( LHR) and it is strickly enforced. and many smaller airlines cannot take standard cases and certainly ” the largest possible carryon” that pelican case claims to be.

thats why a suitcase can get you thru places where a hard case cannot.
