aiff or ac3 for CD?
i’m guessing ac3, but just wondered if that truly is the best and most universal (as far as playability goes). in the process of convert some old cassette audio tapes to CD.

You would be guessing wrong. AC3 is the Dolby Digital format and is most commonly used in DVD production. It is not generally playable by common software. You should use AIFF or WAVE if you wish to preserve maximum quality, then use iTunes or Toast to create your CD. If maximum sound quality is not required (speech, etc), you could also use MP3 or AAC. There is no best compatible format for the CD end product, as CD’s use a universal format read by every player/computer.

one more thing to guess at: should i have Compressor make them at 44.1, 48/16, or 48/24?

CDs by definition are 44.1 K. Anything else won’t play.
