Aide me in understanding video quantization some
I am reading Compression for great video and audio by Ben Waggoner.
In the chapter about H.264 (I’m reading start to finish), it says about 4×4 blocks that edges go through fewer blocks and so fewer pixels require higher bitrates to encode well. This reminded me that I didn’t understand the compression basics sections in the front of the book.
First, how does a smaller block size mean that edges go through fewer blocks?
Is the bitrate being referred to the bitrate needed to decode the blocks? Or, how does edges going through fewer blocks mean that less bitrate is required? Required to do what?
There are pictures of blocks with a grid of coefficients representing varying values. Then there is a picture of a Yeltsin walk pattern through the block. I am not following how the block coefficients and pattern relate to an input signal.
Is the path through the block something I can think of like a scan line in a monitor?
