  • After Effects wont cast shadows or use GPU

Posted by Erin Bradzz on June 13, 2016 at 12:59 am

This started when I could absolutely not figure out why I couldn’t cast shadows – all the settings and everything were correct, no 2d layers with me 3d layers, etc.
I opened my preview preferences and it won’t allow me to select GPU and use CUDA even though I have it installed.
I have the most updated versions of after effects and CUDA. I imagine this may be the reason I can’t cast shadows.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix one or both of these issues?? Desperate.

    What GPU do you have?

CUDA has nothing to do with shadow-casting.

GPU acceleration via CUDA only affects the ray-tracing renderer; even then, it only speeds up processing. You’ll get identical results with either CUDA-accelerated or software-based renders from the ray tracer.

In addition to Tero’s question, are you using the ray-tracing renderer or the classic 3D renderer? Can you post a couple of screenshots or perhaps a project file?

For some reason, in the project panel you can see the preview and it has shadows.
I am pretty new with after effects – which renderer do you suggest? I have used both and still no shadows.

I’m quite lost and very frustrated!

Change your “Fast Previews” setting to “Off (Final Quality)” — that’s the little lightning bolt icon right underneath your comp viewer. It’s currently highlighted in blue to let you know that it’s active and affecting the viewer.

Your GPU is not made by NVIDIA. It does not support CUDA, so you cannot use hardware acceleration for the ray-tracing renderer. No worries here — you’re not using it here, and it is being replaced with a different workflow going forward anyway.

why bother to post this guy is using internall gpy built in wich is absolute usless.

look at the internal video memory and driver intel lol.

man get a good gpu if u dont understand its your problem

Everyone here is assuming that Ae is using the GPU to render this scene. It is not. The classic 3D renderer is CPU ONLY.

It doesn’t matter that the GPU is integrated Intel hardware. Ae isn’t even trying to use it to render the scene. The GPU has nothing to do with it. You could install seventeen brand new NVIDIA GTX 1080 cards and it wouldn’t make a difference to the features or time of this preview/render.

Check out the difference between Fast Draft and Final Quality:

I SEEN YOUR FAST DRAFT AND FINAL QUALITY , BOTH ARE PIXELATED THE REASON BEHIND THIS ITS BECAUSE U DONT HAVE ENOUGH VIDEO RAM , NOBODY OUT THERE IN 2016 USES INTEL VIDEO INTERNAL GRAHPHICS TO PLAY GAMES OR RUN APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE GPU.

IF U DONT HAVE GOOD GRAPHICS OR ATLEAST A DECENT ONE U WILL END UP WITH THESE PIXELATED ISSUES.

    GO TO
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC 2014\Support Files\raytracer_supported_cards.txt

    BACK THAT FILE raytracer_supported_cards.txt

THEN OPEN IT AND ADD YOUR GRAPHICS CARD THERE.

BEFORE U EDIT IT OR RUSH , CHECK THE WAY THE TEXT AND GPU INFO ARE FORMATED
AND ADD YOURS THAT WAY , SAVE IT EXIT , RESTART AFTER EFFECTS AND GO TO SETTS AND TRY SELECT YOUR GPU

[hanna dean] “I SEEN YOUR FAST DRAFT AND FINAL QUALITY , BOTH ARE PIXELATED THE REASON BEHIND THIS ITS BECAUSE U DONT HAVE ENOUGH VIDEO RAM”

It’s pixelated because I posted it as an animated GIF!

[hanna dean] “NOBODY OUT THERE IN 2016 USES INTEL VIDEO INTERNAL GRAHPHICS TO PLAY GAMES OR RUN APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE GPU.”

This is true, but AE doesn’t require a GPU. It’s CPU-based. Really.

[hanna dean] “IF U DONT HAVE GOOD GRAPHICS OR ATLEAST A DECENT ONE U WILL END UP WITH THESE PIXELATED ISSUES.”

    100% wrong.
