  • After Effects with AMD 64 Bit Processor.

Hi, I have After Effects 6.5 Professional and have been trying to learn it as a beginning user. I am working through some tutorials in the book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects Vol. 1 and when I go to render the project from the render queue I get an error message that After Effects has crashed. When I close that error message then I get a message that I have one chance to save my project, when I close that then After Effects closes down. I have and AMD 64 bit 3500+ processor. I installed everything on my other computer that has a 32 bit AMD 2800 processor and it renders fine. I was wondering if ANYONE has had a similar problem or knows first hand if there is a compatibility problem between AE and the AMD 64 bit processors.

    Thank you.

    Hi Bruce,

I have been editing with AE6.5Pro for over a year on AMD FX-51 with no similar problem. Using XP Home SP1 with 2gb ram and Nvidia Quadro FX 1100 video.

    Good luck.

    Hi raf,

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the info. What speed is your AMD FX-51 processor? I don’t know if that would make a difference compared to mine or not.
I’m beginning to think that I may have a bug in my system as I get an Application Error message when I boot up talking about a memory location when I boot up and saying that the referenced memory could not be read. Then it says Click on OK to terminate the program or Cancel to debug. I usually just close it but this might be causing the problem. Have you ever run into a problem like this? Or if anyone else reading this post has come across something like this please let me know.

    Thank you,
    Bruce

I forgot to mention that I am using Windows XP Professional with SP1 with 1 Gb ram and the ATI Radion X800 Pro with 256 mb of ram.

My question to you Bruce is why are you using a 64 bit processor without any software to support it?

    Best,

    Rob

The AMD 64-bit CPU’s can also run a 32-bit OS fine. There’s not much of a speed gain. Most people using 64-bit CPU’s are waiting for WinXP 64-bit and suitable drivers.

That’s what I figured as everything else seems to run fine. It’s just when I try to render a project with AE 6.5 that it crashes on this machine. The same program works fine on my 32 bit machine.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Hi Rob,

Which software are you talking about, Windows XP-64? All my other programs seem to work fine, AE 6.5 works fine also except that it crashes when I try to render a project.

    Thanks,
    Bruce
