  • After Effects RAM preview crash

    Hi,
After several days of testing I’m experiencing a crash of After Effects (6.5.1) when using preview to external monitor via my Decklink HD Pro 444.
It happens randomly, time to time, during scrubbing but mostly during ram preview. Sometimes it crashes to the windows (and AE let me save the work), sometimes computer reboots without any warning (in minor cases). Most of all it happens when I stop RAM preview loop. Microsoft web page says that it is caused by Quick Time (and eventlog shows this message: Faulting application afterfx.exe, version 6.5.128.7, faulting module quicktime.qts, version 6.5.2.10, fault address 0x0013780b). I think it must be something with Decklink using QT because if I turn the AE video preview off (desktop only) everything is ok. I’ve got QT v 6.5.2 installed.
I have even tried to reinstall whole system. Now I’ve got clean installation without any waste software. Same result.
I think my computer is fast enough and very stable all other way. No problem with Premiere nor anywhere else except AE.

I’ve found this document on Adobe’s website https://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330611.html so it is not an unknown issue. Unfortunately none of those workarounds mentioned in this document helped.

    My system config:
Dual Xeon 3,6GHz, 2GB of memory, Quadro FX 3400 graphic, 1,2TB Raid 0 via Adaptec controller, all on Tyan S2676 board.

    Anybody has similar problem?

    Thanks for help

    Try disable ECC ram.

Thanks for comment Yves but I’m not sure how are you mean that…
How to disable ECC ram? Mean less then 2gig?

I’ve got the same problem with after effects. It doesn’t happen a lot, but it still freezes the system occasionally. I have the ram ECC error correction turned off (you do this in the BIOS of your motherboard) so that isn’t the culprit. However, I did have playback problems from Premiere with the ECC turned on, so I’d still recomend turning it off.

My system is a dual 3ghz Xeon Nocona (the new chips with 800mhz bus and EMT64 extensions) on a Supermicro motherboard and 2gigs ram. I wonder if doubling the ram to 4gigs would fix the problem.

    Stew,
I tried to disable ECC check in a Bios. I think that crashes are less often (can I say it in english?) but it’s hard to say. Maybe it’s just my feeling. I’m not able to precisely determine exact circumstances when it’s happen. What version of After Effects/QuickTime/Deckling drivers are you using? It seems we’ve got very similar system (Dual Nocona here too). I’m in contact with Blackmagic support guy about it but no usefull help there yet (It’s more complicated due to time zone gap). Did you get some support from them?
And finaly. What does Premiere do? Crashes? Freezes? I’m not able to test it thoroughly, I just played with SD footage and it works pretty well (even with ECC check on). But who knows…

    Sorry for too much qustions

PS: I have got this Error message from AFX https://www.intimate.cz/files/hdv/error.jpg
