I created a background in Photoshop which I placed into After Effects. When I clicked on it and added the 3D stroke effect it tuned my background black. After I was finished drawing my stroke and closed it the positive space showed my background and the rest of the negative area was black. Is there anyway to have my 3D stroke move on top of my background without turning it black?

use one of the transfer modes for 3D stroke. You can find it on the bottom of the effect parameters.
