I’m hitting a roadblock I can’t overcome with after effects paint tool. I’m trying to do a simple character outline with the paint tool and then eliminate the video background leaving the rotoscoped outline. But I can’t eliminate the video background. The switch ‘paint on transparent layer’ when turned on blacks out the whole screen, paint tool included. What am I doing wrong? I did this a week earlier with no problems!

I’m not questioning your intelligence and I know this kinda like asking “is it plugged in?” but I’ve gotta ask. Is your paint stroke the same color as the background of the comp?

Negative. I tried using blue, red and gold color both through changing it in the paint tool color palette and in the effects control in the timeline after I’ve painted a line. I’ve also tried a hue shift. But I’ll just skip this step. I’ve been rotoscoping using masks on the same video and the idea of using a render> stroke on the mask didn’t hit me until late last night. I have no need to paint. Thanks Tyler, I won’t hit you.

    Good, I’m fragile.

Best of luck on future projects that require the paint effect.
