After Effects output – alternative to AVI
Hi,
I have to output 4 hours of FullHD animation (split in 70 projects) from AE.
The files will be edited further in Premiere. Now, normally I would do AVI uncompressed, but I’m looking at a lot of space here (1.5 – 2 TB).
My real estate (of 11 TB) is already getting clogged and I wonder if the AVI’s are not overkill. For the 1080p will be shrunk to DVD resolution anyway.For this scenario how (format/codec) would you output the files to keep editing smooth in Premiere while retaining high quality? Should skip avi and go h284 mp4 if I plan to make a blu-ray version later on?

Personally I would export as a DNxHD 220 file. That reduces the size to about 300 GB and still gives you a robust way to store the video for reediting.Im guessing you are on a PC. Here is the link.

Tom’s suggestion of DNxHD is a good one for something that loses a little bit of quality but makes files that are have good size and performance characteristics for further editing.
But you may sometimes need to preserve all possible quality, and for that you should consider a QuickTime file with the PNG video codec. This codec compresses the frames, but it does so without losing any quality. This is much better than uncompressed AVI in terms of file size, and you lose no image information.
