  • After Effects missing / killed Quicktime codecs after latest update?

Posted by Oliver Koch on April 7, 2018 at 5:47 am

    Hi everyone,

I’ve updated After Effects to the latest version 15.1.0 today as well as the media encoder.
Now I can’t use my extended Quicktime codecs anymore. They’re not showing up in the codec dropdown anymore.

The option for Quicktime itself is still there along with the few ones AE comes with on Windows, but all the ones I installed on top of that have disappeared.
(pretty much the extended codec library you get from QT 7 plus a few other ones)
I uninstalled and re-installed all components but they’re not made available for me to use.
I’m on Windows 10 by the way.

I’m heavily reliying on the usage of QT codecs such as HAP for my daily production.
Does anyone have a hot fix for this by any chance? Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Cheers! ☺

Have a look at a few of the previous threads with everyone lamenting the loss of these codecs. We don’t know if this is a done deal or not or if it’s just Adobe and Apple’s ongoing spat.

Umm…what?! Just had a good read. This is insane! Have they finally lost it entirely?

Just downgraded to previous version via CC app. At least that fixed it for now.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Adobe not supporting 32bit Quicktime Codecs anymore? I’ve noticed a warning in the last few installations of Premiere that 32bit Quicktime support would be discontinued in a future release. This might be that release.

    Workarounds

If you run into issues because of this change, use any of the following workarounds:

For export formats, use the currently available newer codecs.
For import formats, transcode legacy footage to a newer codec.

Perhaps, but do they offer any utility or even recommend a means of doing so?

[Dave LaRonde] “The only sure-fire way I’m aware of is NOT to do the update, drop what you’re doing, run out and buy boatloads of storage, and use the previous version to transcode your stuff.”

Not everyone has that luxury unfortunately and I’m simply inquiring as the issue has come up on the Newtek forums.

I’ve remained with the CS6 suite as I got tired of Adobe surprises over the years & feel a bit sorry for the newcomers that don’t get much choice.

I installed the new version and haven’t really had any of the issues other people are having. As far as 32bit codecs, I still have Adobe Media Encoder 2017 installed on my machine so the couple times I’ve had clips that are in an older codec I brought them into Media Encoder 2017 and encoded them to a more modern codec and they worked fine. I agree it would be nice if Adobe made a way of asking you to transcode automatically any clips that it does not agree with now. It’s going to be a nightmare for older projects. Looks like I’ll have to keep a copy of the older Premiere and Media Encoder on hand if I have to open an older project that has a ton of 32bit video files.
