This has been an ongoing issue, I have spoken to maybe a dozen people at Adobe support and I did all their trouble shooting and nothing worked. They ended up telling me to reformat my PC which I really don’t want to do.

I will explain what happens as it’s unusual.

My PC freezes completely, not just AE. Freezes for about 20 seconds and my monitor turns off and on. I here that windows connect sound. Then my composition area is white and AE is buggy so I need to restart after effects.

I receive no error message. I have no issues with any other apps just AE.

Usually the freeze is triggered when I click outside of AE or when I have Media encoder open and switch between apps by clicking the icons on the taskbar.

Trouble shooting that I have done so far

    Clean uninstall and reinstall

    Removed all plugins

    Updated drivers

    Turn off Hardware acceleration.

    Maximum amount of memory allocated.

    Delete all disk cache files

    Rolling back to older versions

    Delete temp folders

    Computer specs

    RTX 2070 Super

    64GB ram

    AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

    Windows 11 Pro

I had this happen too and beleive it is a Windows 11 issue to do with the a GPU conflict.

I found that removing the HDMI cable from the monitor and reconnecting it triggered the desktop open, but AE would then crash. At least I’m not forcing a restart on my PC anymore, but it’s still not great.

It seems if i put a solid layer over the video footage it doesn’t freeze. So it has something to do with video footage being shown in my composition.

This sounds like a GPU related problem.

Do you use the Mercury-Engine in Adobe?

Does the problem occur everytime or after a while of using AE?

What is connected to your GPU and how?

How much RAM (from the GPU) is dedicated for AE usage?

    thank you for your reply.

I have Mercury GPU acceleration cuda enabled

it occurs when handling video footage, not with images or layers.

I have 2 monitors connected to the GPU via HDMI and display port.

How much RAM (from the GPU) is dedicated for AE usage? how do i check this

Is your footage H.264? I wonder if the issue is occurring with GPU-accelerated playback.

Do the crashes still happen if you use ProRes footage (or some other non-H.264 flavor)?

Try to use only one monitor, preferable the display port one and see if the problem goes away.

It happens with video-footage, because that is accelerated with GPU. I bet you use a h264 or h265 codec for the videofiles. Mind you that .mp4 files use these codecs.

Do you have any third party codecs installed?

You will find the GPU RAM settings under, Preferences –> Preview. There is a GPU-Information button. Try to have 1/3 of RAM free for other GPU-related tasks. Dont use maximum.
