Hi, does anyone know how to create this type of pattern? Basically, I need a large hexagonal pattern where the hexagons have different opacities/brightnesses that I can subtly animate to look like a shimmer.

You can create the pattern with two hexagonal shapes and a repeater, but animating each one separately is a whole different story. You’ll need a particle system such as Element 3D or Trapcode Form to do that.

I used this for a job years ago, I cant test it right now and cant remember exactly what parameters you could change, but it might help https://aescripts.com/yy_hextex/ The image looks like a 3d job though, and the shimmering would be made of real reflections. you might be able to fake this using another layer to ‘light’ your hexagons, that layer can have noise etc to create the changes in tone.
