After Effects help/advice
Posted by Jestah57 on August 22, 2005 at 12:04 amHello, I am planning to produce a photo slideshow (for weddings and birthday parties), and was wondering if AE is a good program to use? If not, can anyone tell me what is good program to use? Also any advice on resolution/size, and techniques to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

August 22, 2005 at 1:12 amThis depends on how devoted to your work you are. After effects, i think is a great program, but i have spent many hours learning it as quick as possible. You can produce great things and they will get better as you do.
Never let your doubt blind your goals, for your future lies in your ability, not your failure…

August 22, 2005 at 1:16 amHitman,
thanks for the reply, but are you saying AE will do the job I want, or no? Im just looking to do a simple slideshow, about 70 pictures with music (which I can add in Premiere if need be), my main concern is transitions and simple animation of the pictures (motion, zooms, etc). Anyone else any advice or suggestions?
Thanks again!

August 22, 2005 at 1:35 amAfter Effects may be overkill. Can’t you do these things in Premiere? AE is certainly capable of it, but the things you are describing are pretty easy to do in Final Cut Pro, and I would imagine you could also do them in Premiere.

August 22, 2005 at 2:26 amI’m a past wedding photographer. I used to do shows with 8 slide projectors controled by Arion. I can’t say with any higher regard the answer to what you are looking for is Pro Show Gold 2.5 by Photodex. I have used it extensively for exactly what you want to do. You can try it for free.

August 22, 2005 at 5:20 amThanks all…Ill look into Pro Show Gold 2.5, as well as Final Cut. Premiere is highly capable of what I want to do, but the transitions are somewhat simplistic, and animating the pictures may not go as smoothly. Thanks all for your advice, and keep me posted if you have any other ideas!

one more things, to ask…….this trial found here:
https://www.photodex.com/products/proshowgold/
is there a time limit to using the trial? is there limitations to its functionality? and as a past wedding videographer, do you have any advice for me as far as resolution for projecting it and anything else? Thanks! -

August 22, 2005 at 2:19 pmSounds to me like the Apple iApps are perfect for what you want. Like iMovie and iDVD. And if you felt compelled to get more complex than that, Motion is great for quick animations due to it’s behaviors that don’t need keyframing.
That being all said, if you wanted to take the work to the highest level of just about any graphics you see on TV, After Effects would be your tool then.

August 22, 2005 at 8:03 pmView pro show demos at the web site. You will be able to make a dvd for showing on a projection tv, regular tv, the quality is very good it just depends on the projector.
