  After Effects Help!

  Okay so I am doing the TV Grid tutorial which can be found here.

  I have done everything up to putting in all the video clips in After Effects CS3
  I try to delete the White BG layer it makes the comp window go black. Everything disappears. So I then noticed that its all on the BG layer as a mask or something like it. It has a gray box around it and four dots on the corners, when moved it reveals black over parts of the video clips. the video clips themselves do not move just the mask type thing. What is this doing and how do I turn it off! Please someone help me.
