  After Effects faster after computer re-boot?

  I was trying a full res playback of a 3 second loop of some text rotating in ray-tracing with some extrusion. I found that it took 4m55s which I thought was way too slow. I tried purging the memory and disk cache, still same preview time. I tried restarting AE, same preview time. Then just for the heck of it I re-booted my computer, it was able to preview in only 2m12s!

  I know re-booting is known to help troubleshooting but does anyone know what is actually going on here? How will I know in the future if I could be halving my work-time if I just re-boot?

  AE 2018 – (not running any other apps)

  2011 27″ imac pro
  3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
  20 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1 GB
