  • After Effects Eyedropper/Color Picker Not Working

Posted by Zak Stoltz on June 11, 2012 at 10:19 pm

This is driving me crazy. Any time I’m working with ANY effect, clicking on the color picker doesn’t do anything. Nothing. It’s as though I didn’t click it at all. However if I click on the color swatch next to the color picker and THEN select the color picker from inside that window, it DOES work. I have no idea why this happens.

I am occasionally able to get the initial color picker to work if I double/triple/14x click on it at lightning speed. But that’s not something I’m interested in doing more than never again.

    Any ideas?

Which version of AE and which effect’s eyedropper are you using?

Ah yes. Working with CS5.5 and it’s literally every effect that has a color picker.

That is strange! Not knowing better, my first culprit of choice would be OpenGL. Conduct a little mini investigating to see if such is the case.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! When I turned off OpenGL at first, it didn’t do anything, but then I restarted my computer and the color picker worked like a charm. Then I turned OpenGL back on, and everything still works. Just had to reset it I guess.

    Thank you Roland!!!

I found that it was another application (spotify) who made the eyedropper fail. It probably uses openGl in some odd way. Try turn off all other applications if it fails again. I didn’t even have to restart AE, it simply started to work again when Spotify was terminated.

Ahhh. That is very interesting. The problem has been coming back every now and then, and I have definitely had Spotify running in the BG almost constantly since I got it earlier in the year… Will have to keep an eye on that. Thanks for the insight!

    You are a genius 😀
I was going crazy with this bug for hours now, turned off spotify and the color picker worked again immediately!
    Thanks a lot

I’m going to follow up many years later. Yes, it’s Spotify for me as well. Shut it down, instantly good to go.
