  • After Effects error: opening sound component (-2166) Please help!

    Posted by Gizmo1990 on February 1, 2006 at 10:19 am

    I’m trying to output my comp but each time I add audio to it I get this error message:

    After Effects error: opening sound component (-2166)

    (10 :: 44)

    Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? I also get the same error when I load the audio into my comp and open its waveform?

    The audio file is just a simple WAV file exported from Goldwave.

    I’d really appreciate any help.

    TRhere’s never anything simple about a multimedia file. There are always many factors, or as Alan Lorence at the particleIllusion forum like to say “Flavors” of certain file formats.

    Make sure it’s not using any special codec on Export. Also what is the sample rate? I’ve found that AE sometimes won’t let me bring in 48000Khz – Try 44100Khz.

    Also – have you shut down and restarted your computer? I knwo that;s basaic, but that has helped me with stuff like this in the past.

    Thanks for your reply Aharon.

    The format is just plain old vanilla WAV. I tried exporting it out at different sample rates but with no success.

    Earlier I tried installing a clean version of 5.5 on another machine and running my comp there. Result – it worked perfectly. AE had no problems using the WAV files.

    This leads me to suspect theres some odd codecs or something on my main pc causing this problem? All I can think of now is doing a complete format and reinstall on my main work machine…? 🙁

    before doing anything rash, try bringing a wave from another computer over to AE on your main computer. If that works then the wave files you are making are the problem, not AE. Then follow up on that.

    In the interim you could always convert to another format, such as making the audio file an MOV (if you have quicktime pro).
