    Aloha,

I am trying to render a reel from an HD movie in After effects and I keep getting the following error about half way through:

After Effects error: could not create 1920×1080 image buffer

This reel is all cuts, CF30 HDV footage, edited in FCP5 and sent to AE6.5 with Automatic Duck. In AE I did color correction with Color Finesse. When I render out the 30P comp like this everything is fine.

We made the error of shooting 30P and for distribution we need 25P also. No problem, I used Twixtor to convert 30p to 25p. At first I applied Twixter to the entire comp and it worked, but most of the cuts had blended frames.

So I put Twixtor on every clip in the Comp. We have 9 reels in the movie and on the first couple comps the render went fine. Now on the third reel I keep getting this error about half way through the render. I have gone into the Secret menu and told AE to purge memory every 5 frames and that didn’t help.

This render is about 50hours on my dual 2.5 G5 with 2GB ram, and it keeps crashing about 16 hours in. So I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out.

I have searched everywhere and have not found a solution. Does anyone know how I can get past this?

    Mahalo,

Well since you applied Twixtor to each cut, then each copy of Twixtor is needing a 1920×1080 image (actually, multiple images at that resolution, since we need more than one image to compute the motion). Eek! That’s a lot of memory and I expect the problem happens when the memory gets fragmented, or where two cuts cross each other by a frame or so.

Are you using Twixtor 4? If not you should… it has a special feature to allow you to mark cuts in the source so that images don’t get blended across cuts that you mark in the source material. You can read about this feature in the manual. And in the “Advanced” projects available from the Tutorials section for Twixtor on our website, there is short example project that shows how to set up Twixtor to acknowledge cuts your footage.

However, because you are changing frame rates (and not just doing speed changes) you need to do the following: put your 30p footage into a 30fps comp instead of 25fps comp. Apply Twixtor and animate the Src: Mark Segments menu item appropriately so that it reflects all your cuts. In order to mark the cuts you’ll need to set the Display mode to “Source” in order to mark the cuts. When done marking the cuts for Twixtor make sure Twixtor’s Display setting is “Twixtored Output”. Leave the speed set to 100%. Also, make sure to set Twixtor so the that input frame rate is 30, with no fields. Then drop the 30fps comp into a 25fps comp and render out the 25 fps comp. Twixtor will figure out how to do the frame rate conversion properly. You need to set up Twixtor this way (instead of applying Twixtor to a 30p clip inside a 25fps comp) because you need to make the cuts at the source frame rate. Make sense?

    As well,

    * Try to set your memory preferences in AE preferences to way below 100% (like 70%)
Normally it’s more on Windows that memory get fragmented like that. Most sensitive to starting another app while AE is running, eg a Quicktime movie player and not releasing memory.
    * Try to uncheck the Keep Memory [x] thing in Twixtor (your render will then be slower).
    * Maybe not an option for you but you can render to a frame sequence format and restart where it breaks and then at the end make a quicktime of that frame sequence. I am not sure it’s of any help to you but in Quicktime player you can do Select All and paste a Sequence after another, it will make a Quicktime reference movies to wrap that up without rerendering the frames, thus allow you to restart another Quicktime movie from point of failure.

    Peter,

I am using the latest version of Twixtor and I have read about marking all the cuts so Twixtor works across them, but I have several hundred cuts in each of the nine comps I would have to find and mark. It seemed like a much easier set-up for me to just select all the layers of the comp (clt-a) and apply twixtor them them all at once.

Spending days marking the frame before and after every single cut can’t be the only answer. Nested comps in AE make this even more difficult as I can’t just hit a key and jump to the next edit like FCP, so I have to step through every single frame lettign them render while looking for the cuts.

I have lowered my memory use from the default 120% to 80%, lowered the default cache from 60% to 40%, and I told the Secret menu to purge memory every 1 frame and started the render again.

Yes, you can set Twixtor on first layer, copy, select all layers and paste if you only do frame rate conversion.
