  • AFter Effects error: Can’t overwrite file

Posted by Joey Sperber on March 17, 2014 at 1:27 am

Hi, I recently updated to a mac pro and used my backups from my old computer to put on the new one. Now whenever I open up a old AE file or try to use dynamic link with Premiere Pro I get the message

After Effects error: Can’t Overwrite file “/Users/joey/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/11.0/Adobe After Effects 11.0-x64 Prefs

The problem is that I can’t even find that file on my hard drive, any idea what happened

    Thanks,
    Joey

No idea what the issue is but you can find the Prefs File via AE’s Preferences dialog window. In this window, at the bottom left, is a button that sends you to the OS and selects the Prefs file.

Mac OS now hides your Library folder. Here are 19 different ways to get to that folder on Lion and up:
    https://www.macworld.com/article/1161156/view_library_folder_in_lion.html

Easiest way: go to Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G (for Go to Folder) and enter:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/

Select the 11.0 folder and press Cmd+I (for Get Info). You may need to click the lock button in the lower right corner and enter your password to allow yourself to make changes. Make sure that the folder is set “Read & write” and also click the gear button and choose “Apply to enclosed items.”

Walter – Thanks so much. You just saved my A. BTW, it works for AE 10.0 as well.
