Try playing around with your memory & cache preferences. Raising your maximum memory usage or lower your image cache preferences, it helps reduce fragmentation. I’m running a Macbook Pro with 4 GB ram. I’m able to create a project at 2500 x 1500. My maximum memory is set at 120% or 3 CB. Maximum RAM cache size is set at 60% or 1.8 GB. Hope this helps.

And ‘purge all’ before render (edit menu)
and if it’s a long render you might like to purge memory every xx frames
(secret settings in preferences, shift click preferences)
