    Well, that’s because the After Effects ray tracer requires CUDA, so if they hadn’t performed the hack to make the 650M chipset work in After Effects, the numbers would have been similar.

    Here’s some more on Juan Salvo and Danny Princz’s AE/GPU benchmarks [link].

    It’s worth noting these benchmarks are specific to CS6’s new ray-tracing renderer. Third-party effects like Sapphire and Optical Flares can also process on the GPU, but normal 2D and Classic 3D rendering in After Effects is all on the CPU.

    Actually, After Effects CS6 uses NVIDIA’s Optix Ray-tracing engine which is why it’s so much faster on NVIDIA GPUs

    And NVIDIA’s OptiX engine in turn exploits CUDA for GPU acceleration.

    Gary misspoke when he said that AE’s ray tracer requires CUDA. As these tests show, you can render ray-traced comps on the CPU, but it is dramatically slower than rendering on the GPU, so a qualified NVIDIA GPU is highly recommended!

    Yes, I should have clarified. AE’s ray tracer won’t utilize OpenCL, apparently, so those tests are basically CPU render time, not CPU+GPU render time like the NVIDIA chipset allows.

    This is true. When there is no NVIDIA GPU present, the Optix engine has been recompiled for CPU and therefore takes a performance hit. For my MacBook Pro with AMD/ATI, I use the “Draft” mode which utilizes OpenGL. For basic visualization, this isn’t too bad, but like you said the NVIDIA card is highly recommended!
