Unfortunately. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, you can go from CS3 to CS4 cross platform but you cant go backwards. I have run into that before and it sucks.

Thanks for your quick response. I have access to CS3 at my university. Do you think if I resaved the after effects files in CS3 that this would fix the problem?

Unlike some other Adobe software, you can’t save an AE project as an older version than the version you’re saving from … in other words, you can’t save your CS4 project as a CS3 project so the folks you’re trying to share project files with will have to upgrade to CS4 … although at this point it would make most sense for you both to wait for CS5 and upgrade to it at the same time.

The cross-platform part is a non-issue from the Adobe software standpoint, but you’ll want to be careful to avoid font issues.

Thanks very much for the info. Is it possible to create an XML from CS4 to CS3 as a work around? Or is it just not possible no matter what you do to go from CS4 Mac to CS3 PC?

Just want to make sure I’ve covered everything before I pass on the bad news.

Hi David, Just as a side note to let you know, Adobe Encore isn’t cross platform compatible as I’ve lernt from experience but everything else is.

The only solution to this I have found is to open a copy of both CS3 and CS4 on your machine. Load the project in CS4 and import the same footage you are using into CS3. Place the footage into timelines as you have in your CS4 project. now on each layer in CS4 press U to bring up keyframes, select them all then copy them go to CS3 and past them onto the same piece of footage (you will need to ad key frames for any attribute you’ve changed and not keyed or enter this manually). If the keyframe is on an effect it will also copy this if it’s available in CS3.

Our friends https://maltaannon.com/ are currently working on that, he already find a work around consisting in draging and droping the assets from cs4 project windows to cs3 project windows, so you better having cs3 on your mac!!! but still have some issue, just go and read for yourself.
