After Effects clipping whites
Posted by Rick Diamond on January 12, 2010 at 8:11 pmWhen importing HD footage, either xdcam ex 1080 30p or apple pro res 1080 30p from the ex source, After Effects is clipping my whites and I’m losing detail. Is there a setting I’m missing?

January 12, 2010 at 8:16 pmWhen you say ‘clipping’ your whites, do you mean ‘keying them out to transparency, or garbling them into video noise of some sort?

January 12, 2010 at 8:41 pmSorry for the “old-school” term. Visually, the detail which is there in the original footage becomes washed-out and your left with nothing but a white field and no detail. The white looks like it’s been stopped from going over 100IRE (clipped). Mids and blacks are fine.
Also, and this appears to be unrelated, but when I import XDCam EX footage, the black levels in after effects are too low. This doesn’t happen with pro res footage. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Rick

January 12, 2010 at 9:16 pmGood point Dave. The prores file created in AE is, in fact, clipping at 100 when viewed in FCP. The original source is topping out at about 110IRE. Any way of getting the detail back, or better yet, preventing After Effects from clipping at 100?
