    Hello All,

I am looking for some advice in respect to the new MacBook Pro and how much memory to purchase. I work with a lot of stills and some 1080p footage… With FCP. I was looking to purchase a Mac Pro, but would like a little portability and want to wait until the new models are released.

My question is… do I need 8 gigs of RAM or is that total overkill? Will 4 gigs do the job? Give me as much info as you possibly can, for the upgrade is over $1000. At the same time, i don’t want to upgrade later and have wasted some cash.

Any help would be much appreciated… Thanks in advance!

Pardon my ignorance in respect to the Hardware… But, with the MBP would AE only be able to use 4 gigs of RAM?

I am thrown by the “2 Duo”… does it have two processors or four (with two on each chip)?

    Thanks… Ryan

If you were buying this 17” MBP, would you opt for 8 gigs of RAM or 4 gigs?

[Dave LaRonde] “Case in point: did you notice there’s no Firewire 400 port on this machine? Hope you don’t need to hook a DV or an HDV camera up to this thing. “

Sorry, Dave … there seems to be a cable for that. 🙂

… and I think this MacBook Pro ain’t the MacBook Air. Not so thin.

[Ryan Sebastian] “the upgrade is over $1000”

Buy the laptop with the least amount of ram possible, then buy ram from one of these places and install yourself.

Crunch the numbers and you will see a huge savings, especially on maxing out the ram to 8gb.

(These guys will buy back the ram modules you no longer need once you get the larger replacement modules)

Just make sure you order the right kind!

Like the guy says, Max out the ram, that’s it!!

Maxing out the RAM seems to be the consensus… and with aftermarket to save the cash. Is there any downside to the aftermarket RAM? I assume that RAM is RAM… as long as it is the correct kind.

Is one of the fore mentioned options better than the others?

    Again, thanks for the help!

i’ve seen on Tom’s Hardware, on the new macbook articles something related to instabilities with aftermarket ram. BUT, there is some memories with this problem, not all…it worth a read:

Crucial, as a source of RAM, comes highly recommended.
