  • After Effects and C4D Integration: Adding video files

Posted by Manny Rellesiva on October 14, 2007 at 11:51 am

I read several tutorials in the web on how to import or integrate the c4D render files into after effects. What I would want to accomplish is to place the videos in an electronic billboard (that will serve as the ‘video holder’ in After Effects) I created using C4D R10. I read from Creating Motion Graphics by T.Meyer that in order to place the video into the video holder (in my case, the electronic billboard) in After Effects, you should enter the same position as your video holder in C4D and then make this layer (the video file) a 3D layer.

However, I saw this video tutorial

    https://www.maxoncomputer.com/ads/aftereffects/advertisement.asp?cid=62

In the second part (Part 2: A WB Promo), I noticed that it didn’t mention the steps on how to add the video (as what the previous tutorial Ive read). It just simply dragged the video file from project window in After effects. Or maybe it was just not mentioned.

What are the exact steps to incorporate your videos? Could someone point me to any tutorial sites with elaborate steps. thanks in advance.

The missing part of this equation is the importing of the C4d camera. You will need to import the.aec file that is generated when you enable “compositing Project file” in C4d’s save image window (under render settings). You will need the c4d plug-in in your Ae plug-ins in order to import the camera and light data. Also, there is an external compositing tag that enables you to get the exact position of your object relative to the camera. this is particularly useful when objects are moving independent of the camera.

if i have a light nested in a moving object to represent the face plane of that object for AE compositing, and the host object spins, i am only getting the light to import the position moves, not the rotation of it, as it is nested in a spinning object. if i am to dial this in, should i look at doing this spinning motion with a camera instead?

the way i have it now i have to manually play with the rotation settings on my AE layer that is supposed to be on the face of one side of the cube

You need to add an external compositing tag to the object, this will appear in your ae comp as a null.
