after effects 6.5 not compatible with Avid?
I have heard that there is a conflict vis a vis DLL files between this new version of AE and my Avid system, running on Windows NT. Could this be true?

AE 6.5 is certainly not supported on Win NT, that could be what you’re hearing about.
