I would like to know if there is anyway to take an object from 3DSM and import it in AE and have the 3D properties like in 3dsm. Not a 2d layer in 3d space. I want a 3d layer in 3d space. Is it just easier to render a movie from 3DSM and just use that in AE rather than animating 3d properties in AE?? if anyone has any experience or any idea to help get more of a 3d feel in after effects let me know. Thanks

The only thing I can think of is 3d invigorator. I dont know enough about importing 3dsm models (mostly, i’m just jazzing up a 2d graphic) but check it out.

3D invigorator is the only option to bring in 3d objects.
However, if your model has tons of polygons, 3d invigorator and AE will not be
able to handle the operation of any sort and it will run out of memory.
For a while I tried that exact senario myself only to find that there is so much
limitation with this method, especially if your 3d model is very complex.
Look into the 3d invigorator because it can do some great things, of course, all
depending on what you want to do exactly.

    Good luck

It would depend on what you plan on using the footage for in AE. 3d invig. is a great program and can do a lot, but sometimes it would be a better option to render the movie out of 3dsm and then import that along with the camera data which can then be applied to an AE camera. That way it would still look like it’s interacting with the AE 3d space, but be much easier on the render.

try boomerlabs.com Max2AE product to recover at least the camera, lights and defined in Max planes so they turn into 3D layers in 3D space in AE
However the 3D compositing space rendering is not as evolved as other apps for effects
