have you tried changing the layer orders? or pre-comping some of the different elements?

Make sure you use the advanced 3d renderer, you can set it in the Composition settings, advanced tab

Make sure your 3d layers are all toghether in the timeline, if they are separated by a 2d layer sometimes the render looks messed up. I remember reading something in that manual about 3d layers that are separated by 2d layers don’t interact correctly.

Two reasons really,

1. Have no knowledge of 3D applications, come from a 2D background.

2. Mucking around with after effects seems to create something unique in a 3D world. Ok I’m not going to be create proper textures and lighting effects… but the end result strikes a chord with me. Just trying to push the program which I spend most of my time with to the limit, thought I may have reached it yesterday, but with the advice of this board, it’s going even further… ps adobe rules!

I’d join Chris and advise you to spend the $100 for Cinema 4D CE+ and learn it before you have to do something that AE can’t do … on a deadline.

At least learn how to extrude along a path to make those growing tubes and ribbons. It’s dead-easy in C4D.

My point is, actually, if you want to be an AE artist, fine. But if you want to be a motion graphics artist, you’ll need a 3D app sooner or later. Better to hop on the learning curve now.
