After a swift IT takeover, my old but working mac was taken unexpectedly and replaced with a new one. I lost all my settings, presets, codecs, effects, supporting apps, etc. I was completely blank-slated. So trying to figure out how to get a brand new iMac (3.5ghz i7, Nvidia 780), Mavericks 10.9.1, with Production Premium CS6 up and running sans internet and no Apple ID. Previously, we shot Canon DSLR, transcoded to AIC or ProRes, edited in FCP7 and output to WMV and for Vimeo/Youtube. As a reference, I have a personal MacPro laptop with both FCP7 and CS6 (&CC) installed where exporting XML and switching apps is seamless.

Presently, I have a trio of conundrums.
    1. With a slew of projects in various parts of the pipeline, how do I get all my functional codecs back like AIC, ProRes, and Animation? Seems I need a “Pro App” to unlock AIC and ProRes (already tried a sneaky app like unpkg to no avail). I also copied/pasted a bunch of my personal computer’s codecs into the new iMac’s Library/Quicktime folder but CS6 didn’t recognize that. Without access to the App Store, is this possible?

    2. How do best protect and port legacy projects from FCP7 to CS6? XML into Premiere is simple enough. Guessing any graphics made in Motion or FCP need to be exported in QTs with alphas? Soundtrack to Audition port?

    3. As a complete adobe newb, am I’m missing anything to get cutting on new projects with DSLRs? Is it true, just start cutting raw h264? quick setup settings?

    1. Scold IT (if you can) for taking a machine that did what you needed, and well, and replaced it with one that cannot do what you need done. If they ask “what can we do to make it work?” Reply: “Install Compressor…the new one. Buy from the Apple store.” That will get you AIC and ProRes back. Simply copying the files like you did won’t work. IN fact, what you did might cause issues. Don’t do that.

If you have any plugins, filters, other software…insist that they put them on the new machine. A friend of mine who worked at a company who’s mascot has two big ears, had his latop swapped out for a new one. He not only did admin stuff, but was the After Effects guy. They updated his AE and other Adobe software, but didn’t transfer over the plugins, and some of them didn’t work. He explained to IT that in order to do his job, he needed them migrated, or new ones purchased. IT eventually happened.

    2. Best way to port projects from FCP to Premiere Pro is to export an XML of the entire project. Works well…except for the TITLES, and moves on stills. Those need to be redone.

Yup. If you not longer have those apps, then that’s what you need to do.

    3. Yes, Adobe PPro works with H.264 native. There are sequence settings specifically for that…listed as DSLR…and then various frame rates.

Thanks for all the advice Shane. I think since it hasn’t had serial number validation yet, I’m running in trial mode, and this might be holding back some features too.

So IT has a Quicktime 7 Pro license they want to install, since the lack of internet access (& App Store) remains. Would this be enough to unlock Apple’s Pro Codecs? Or do we need to get the one of the new Compressor/Motion/FCPXs? I can’t seem to find a list of features and codecs QT7 Pro would unlock or if QT7Pro qualifies as a “Pro App”.

To get Pro Res, I install FC7 first then install PP and the rest of the suite. I think this is pretty common practice. I don’t know a way around this. I use Pro Res all the time. Gerry in Calgary

Well this has been an adventure. The previous version of FCP7 that was on my old mac was actually the previous video producer’s license. So the company doesn’t have a license for FCP7. After a call to Applecare, only FCPX, Motion or Compressor qualify as Pro Apps. They say that registering QT7 Pro would not unlock the codecs. But I imagine since a fresh FCP7 install still works in Mavericks, a fresh install of QT7 Pro might also work too. I just want to get back to work so I’m going to go ahead and buy Compressor once I get internet access and an Apple ID.

You could try bypassing the transcode stage and editing the footage native?

Since its in Trial mode, the DSLR presets are not loading and h264 files are not recognized by Premiere. Just waiting on IT now.

Sorry, it won’t. Apple is right….only installing FCX, Motion or Compressor will add those codecs. They know what they are talking about…they make the app! 🙂

    Good plan.

    Hi Andrew,
All presets and codecs should be available in the trial version. Something else is amiss. Please see this FAQ: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1050730?tstart=0

    Thanks,
